What’s Harmful, and What’s Safe For Your Septic Tank

Have you ever wondered what you use to clean your house, if its safe or if its harmful for your septic tank? As you may already be aware that some household products that you use contain chemicals. These chemicals in products kill the bacteria. Which can upset the balance in the septic tank that can lead to back ups, foul odors, and become very costly. Your septic tank depends on healthy bacteria to keep it functioning properly.

Here is a list of products that are recommended to use that are also safe for the septic tanks and a few that aren’t recommended. This is only some of the many major brands and examples.

 Automatic dishwasher detergents

Dish washing liquids come in regular and antibacterial,are not recommended because it can mess up the process in which the septic system breaks down organic waste. You also want to avoid laundry detergent brands that contain chlorines. If you do use chlorines make sure you use a septic tank additive 24 hours after the use of it. The fabric softeners sheet types are recommended to use but the liquid softeners aren’t.

No liquid hand soaps that have the antibacterial ingredient in it. Believe it or not soap and water has proven to be more effective in controlling the spread of bacteria.

You don’t have to stop using some of your other products, it okay to used in moderation. Using any products you would want to use a septic system additive like Activator 1000. Your taking that extra step to ensure that your septic tank remains running properly. All organic waste (human body waste) is broken down by a natural biological process. Enzymes break down waste so that bacteria can digest it. Many chemicals stop or inhibit natural process from occurring.
